“Sometimes, I have to look back at where I’ve been, so I know where I’m going.”
Hot rod memories, along with growing up together from our 20's was the best for us… YRMV So, yes, we are each other’s “forever…” as it has been 56 years and counting. It was meant to be over the long years we have been through thick and thin, along with some shaky times in our twenties, as well as our thirties. Something must have aligned the planets and all of our friends. The 327 powered sedan delivery just happened to have our first A/C unit in any of our cars. She loved driving the sedan delivery and when it got hot in So Cal, she had first dibs on driving it anywhere. The need to get it reliable enough for my wife to take the hot rod on the road by herself was the primary goal. It wasn’t just me involved in the sedan delivery this time, but now it had a new driver. When I had my old Flathead sedan delivery, it was just me driving and it did not bother me if the hot rod made noises or ran in an unusual way, I could easily get over it with a quick fix. It needed a lot of repairs and replacements to get it to a good safe driving point for the both of us.
When she made the decision on which hot rod project we were going to have next in our lives, we both agreed on a cool 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery. It was such a shock and again I was counting my stars to the official live together days in 1968. But, in 1968, I heard the words above and wanted to fall into a hole. Over the years, I kept pinching myself at my good fortune and vowed not to do anything rash or stupid. It started with this 65 El Camino for 1000’s of miles of fun road trips all over California and Baja, Mexico from 1966 to 1976. We met in a college class, hung out together from 1966 to the spring of 1967 and I finally asked her to get married on the way to a rock concert in Malibu. I could not believe my good fortune and yes, luck. What a catch my wife was in college and during our being together. In our years together from 1966 to the present, one thing always stayed in my mind. “You have given me your trust and restored my faith in love and life… you are my forever.” We have to adapt to make things better…YRMV So, we were teaching ourselves to be adaptable to any new situation that would affect our family’s lives, like in health issues that seem to plague our whole society, today. Someone who did a similar modification may not be the right way for your own build. It was difficult in those early years to set out a plan, but we learned by doing, making some mistakes, absorbing the loss and moving on to the proper way or a new course to get it done. Family decisions and the trail to continue led our lives by making those types of plans and following through. We just did the steps without thinking to make is simple, but efficient and not bothering anyone in the process. Learning things like these in a new situation prepared us for what was ahead, without us knowing about it or making a conscious effort to bring it to the forefront. Of course, planning what was ahead and the obstacles that we had to overcome or modify would solve the problem. If a 10 percent set back was going to be the main modification, then stepping back and identifying what needed to happen to make the move work was put into play. If an SBC motor would fit into a small motor compartment, there were ways to add mounts and bolt it right in place. Looking at a problem, identifying what it is and coming up with several ways to complete the task at hand. If something did not fit or needed another way to make it fit, hot rod/drag race guys/girls adapted to the situation to start the ingenious process that is in most of us.
